A 52-year-old woman and her son were killed and seven others injured— four of them seriously, in a road accident on Bhadarwah-Chamba interstate road near Bhaderwah in district Doda on Tuesday.

Maana Daie, 52, and her son Mukesh, 26, were killed and seven others were injured when the van they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge near Khanni Top on Bhadarwah-Chamba road, 24 km from Bhaderwah town.

According to sources the ill-fated Maruti Omini van bearing registration number JK06A 1698 was on its way from Bhaderwah to famous tourist destination Padri Meadow on Bhadarwah-Chamba interstate road. “When the vehicle carrying nine passengers including the driver reached Khanni Top, the driver apparently lost control on a sharp curve, sending the vehicle 200 feet down a deep gorge,” sources said.

"As soon as we came to know about the accident, a police party under the supervision of SDPO Bhadarwah Touseef Rishu rushed to the spot. The team along with the locals of Thanhala village started rescue operation and within one hour all the nine persons were retrieved," said Rajinder Singh ASP Bhadarwah.

"Two ambulances from sub district hospital Bhadarwah reached the spot and shifted the injured to the hospital, where doctors declared two of the injured as brought dead," the ASP said.

He said a requisition by the district administration for chopper service to shift the four seriously injured to Jammu hospital has been forwarded to the authorities concerned.

The deceased have been identified as Maana Daie (52) wife of Narayan Singh and her 26 year old son Mukesh Kumar resident of Chattra Bhaderwah.

The injured are: Manju Devi (35) wife of Surinder Singh her two sons Krish Raina (11) and Harish Raina (14) of Round Domail Udhampur, Shiv Devi (55) wife of Bhawani Das, her two sons Ranjeet Kumar (26) and Satish Kumar (17) of Tangorna-Chattra and Priya Devi (22) daughter of Surinder Singh of Mathola.
