Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik on Monday joined the protest staged by the family members of Kashmiri businessman, Bilal Ahmed Kawa, who was been arrested in connection with the attack on Red Fort in 2000.

On the occasion, Kawa’s mother, a resident of Downtown petitioned Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to seek release of her son.

Kawa was recently arrested by Delhi Police and anti-terrorism squad of Gujarat. The protestors termed Kawa’s detention uncalled stating that “he is innocent and has been framed on frivolous charges.”

Malik along with the family members of Kawa assembled at Press Enclave here and staged protest against his arrest.

Talking to reporters, Malik said Kawa has “nothing adverse in police records.” “In past too, Kashmiri youth were framed in false cases. There were people from Kashmir who spent their prime of youth in jails and later were acquitted by court,” he said. “This person (Kawa) belongs to Downtown Srinagar and has been doing business in Delhi from last 25 years. He even has a driving license issued by the authorities in Delhi.”

Malik questioned Kawa’s arrest after 17 years of the incident. “This incident has happened nearly two decades ago. There is no FIR against Kawa here or anywhere. They (Delhi police) never said that he was wanted in any case,” he said.

Terming Kawa’s arrest by Delhi police as a “ploy” to get promotions, Malik said, “somebody should ask Delhi police why they are doing this? This is a ploy to get awards and promotions. How can they justify arrest of an innocent person?” Kawa has a flat at film city Noida and Delhi police had never raided Kawa’s house.”

“There can be ramifications of arresting innocent persons. Kashmiris are forced to pick up gun. In present times in south Kashmir  educated youth are joining the armed struggle. These are the same boys whose families were harassed in 2008 and 2010,” he said.

The family of Kawa present in the protest sought intervention of J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti for immediate release of their son. Thanking the J&K Police for their help, the family members said that “Mehbooba should also push for Kawa’s release.”

“My son is my sole hope. Since the day of his arrest, I am completely shaken. I request Mehbooba ji to facilitate my son’s release,” appealed Fatima, mother of Kawa.

J&K Police has already maintained that there have been no charges against Kawa. “There is no case against him here. We have talked to Delhi police in this regard. They are saying that there was warrant number 50012 against him,” said additional director general of police, Kashmir, Muneer Ahmad Khan, adding that “our CID cell is coordinating with Delhi Police in this regard.’

Kawa, who according to his family deals in pelts, owns an accommodation in New Delhi. They said on the day of his arrest, he had gone for medical checkup to Delhi as he was suffering from high cholesterol and other ailments.

The family also produced his passport. “How was he issued the document if he was ever involved in anti national activities,” they said.

The passport bearing number B2687031 stands registered with Kawa’s name mentioning date of issue as 15 January, 2001. “

Kawa’s family said that they are unable to understand how come authorities and security agencies did not get a whiff about him all these 17 years, if he had done anything wrong.

“Our house at Aali Kadal in Srinagar’s Downtown is located adjacent to a big paramilitary installation. If he was involved in anything or as they say in terror activities, why did not they arrest him all these years?” asked Fatima.

She termed her son’s (Kawa’s) detention as a “tactic” to harass Kashmiris. “If he would have been a mujahid (militant), I would have never demanded his release. But, when there is nothing like that, which law permits them to arrest my innocent son,” said Fatima, while breaking down.
