Security has been beefed up in Old Assembly complex here following recent attempt of two militants to entry a camp of paramilitary CRPF at Karan Nagar here.

CRPF had foiled attempt of the militants to enter the camp after which they had entered a nearby private under-construction building. The duo was killed in 30-hour gunfight on Monday.

Following the incident, the CRPF has beefed up security in Old Assembly complex at its two battalions are stationed there.

The main gate of the assembly complex, that houses statutory bodies like State Human Rights Commission, Accountability Commission, Women’s Commission and other offices, has been locked.

The gates are opened only after properly frisking of visitors. CRPF troopers register their names in dairy and check their identity cards.

“We, usually don’t keep gate of the complex locked, but after the Karan Nagar incident, we fear similar attack at CRPF camps here. So to be on a safer side, we have started keeping a strict vigil on people,” said a gatekeeper.

“We are not scared, but we have become careful. We have been anticipating an attack here because this building is complex and has easy access from Old Secretariat. Hundreds of people visit the secretariat every day. Plus people in large numbers visit various commissions here, so we are always at risk,” said a CRPF personnel deployed in Old Assembly.

To mention in 2001, Jammu and Kashmir assembly was attacked by Jaish fidayeen. Three fidayeen had rammed their SUV into the assembly complex. 38 people including civilians and employees died in the attack.

Inspector General of CRPF (Srinagar Sector) Ravideep Sahi said, “We have asked them (the CRPF troopers to be alert after the attack in Kara Nagar.”
