A sensible unbeaten knock of 70-runs under pressure by youngster Jatin Wadhwan guided J&K to its first win of the season in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium, New Delhi on Saturday.

In the thrilling encounter of North Zone group, J&K defeated Haryana by four wickets thanks to a knock by Wadhwan and earlier a superb display by its bowlers. J&K after bundling out Haryana for 116 runs, achieved target in 18.4 overs for the loss of six wickets. Jatin Wadhwan remained unbeaten on 70 while as Manzoor Dar (Pandav) remained unbeaten after playing a cameo of 20 from 12 balls.

Earlier J&K skipper Parvez Rasool won the toss and chose to field first. The decision proved right with Umar Nazir handing J&K two early strikes. Parvez Rasool joined the act in middle by bagging two wickets in two balls. At that point of time Haryana were on 51 for the loss of four wickets with another batsman retired hurt. Middle order tried to resurrect the Haryana inning but regular strikes from J&K bowlers meant Haryana never got away with the scores. Manik Gupta picked three wickets in the middle and then was joined by Muhammad Mudhasir who took one and Umar Nazir who wrapped up the inning. Haryana got all out for 116 runs in 19.2 overs. For J&K Umar and Manik took three wickets each while as Parvez Rasool took two. Mudhasir took one. For Haryana, H V Patel scored 28 while as P Kumar and A Mishra scored 19 runs each.

In reply chasing a low but tricky target, J&K opened with youngster Jatin Wadhwan and Pranav Gupta. They got team to a cautious start knowing that target is not that big. However, after Pranav lost his wicket with JK score on 25, the next batsman Shubham Pundir got out without opening his account. That left J&K on 25 for the loss of two wickets. They both were grabbed by leg spinner A Mishra. Jatin continued to play his strokes combined with the caution. Ian Dev became third J&K wicket to fall scoring mere four runs. That was followed by two back to back run outs for J&K leaving its inning tattering on 54 for the loss of five wickets in 9.5 overs. Parvez Rasool and Owais Shah were the batsman who got run out.

J&K still needed 62 runs to win from 10 overs. With leg spinners operating from both ends skipper Parvez Rasool instead of sending power hitter Manzoor Pandav sent Waseem Raza to join Wadhwan in the middle. This proved to be masterstroke with the duo taking J&K score to 94 runs forming a partnership of 40 runs. Waseem got out after scoring 13 leaving perfect stage for Manzoor to play a cameo and end match in J&K’s favor.

He did exactly that scoring quick 20 runs from 12 balls that included one six and two boundaries. Jatin Wadhwan remained unbeaten on 70 from 61 balls that included three boundaries and five sixes. J&K won match by four wickets.

It was first win in the tournament for J&K after having suffered three back to back defeats against Services, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi earlier.

The match was set up by bowlers for the team but still it needed a superb batting display. Jatin Wadhwan rose to the occasion scoring a match winning knock that was filled with both aggression and control. Waseem gave him good support while as Pandav did what he is best at.

“Bowling has been our strength and today bowlers did really well by restricting a side like Haryana. But it still needed a strong batting display and going by our recent history it was always going to be an uphill task,” said a JK team official.

“Jatin Wadhwan is a great future prospect and today he showed that can handle the tough situations. Pandav played a cameo while Raza gave Wadhwan support when it was most needed. We are hopeful to win our next match as well but it is not to be easy against Punjab on Sunday,” he added.
