They are beginners, says association; Will look into the matter: Parra

Kashmir based female hockey players on Wednesday alleged that Hockey J&K, governing body for hockey in the state, never informs Kashmir players about selection trials.

Hockey J&K is about to field its senior women’s team in senior women’s national hockey championship scheduled to be held in Ranchi from January 26 to February 4. For the event association has shortlisted  around 25 to 30 players who are now undergoing through coaching camp in Jammu.

Kashmir based female hockey players who regularly train in Bakshi Stadium Srinagar have alleged that association did not inform them about selection and now it’s trying to justify their act by saying “We are beginners in hockey.”

“We have been training regularly under expert hockey trainers at Bakshi stadium from last more than one year. It is a sport that very few girls in Kashmir take up. We defied odds and took part in the sport  but now we are not getting the chance to take part in national events. Association on its own shortlisted players in Jammu and never informed us about the process,” a delegation of Kashmiri players told Greater Kashmir.

“To put our case forward we met the association official G S Bakshi. Instead of giving us chance to prove ourselves, he told us  that we are beginners in hockey, hence not eligible for trials. He even did not listen to our plea that we have been training from last more than year and have even represented  the state in national event in year 2016,” players said.

They said they tried to contact sports council officials and even Secretary Waheed ur Rehman Parra but there was no response.

“For a girl it is not easy to take part in regular sports training session in Kashmir. We have defied every problem that we faced and instead of encouraging us Association is not even giving us a chance to play in national event. They never announce dates of selection trials and always discriminate with Kashmir based players,” they added.

When contact General Secretary Hockey J&K, GS Bakshi said that these girls are beginners in hockey and would not have been able to compete with girls from Jammu who are far ahead of them in hockey.

“We will take them for junior event that is scheduled to be held in March,” he said.

Asked why no open selection was held and Kashmir players not informed, he said, “We shortlist players for the coaching camp on the basis of their performance during tournaments. In Kashmir no such tournament was held as players did not turn up. We wanted to hold hockey event for girls in Kashmir but for that players did not turn up,” he added.

Secretary J&K State Sports Council Waheed ur Rehman Parra said that he will look into the matter and will try to get these girls included in the coaching camp. “They should be in camp and they should get a proper chance and exposure in the game. Very few female players in Kashmir play hockey and if we don’t encourage them then in future we may not see any female player from Kashmir at all in this game. I will try to get them into the camp so that they get a proper chance and exposure,” Parra said.
