Terming the situation in Kashmir as “worrisome”, the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said that calling for shutdowns is the “only option left with the resistance leadership to attract the attention of the world community towards the sufferings of Kashmiris.” He also said that civilian killings in Kashmir won’t stop “if the draconian laws like the armed forces special powers Act are not rolled back.”

Addressing Friday congregation at Jamia Masjid here after weeks of house detention, the Mirwaiz said that the situation in Kashmir is “very grim, fragile and worrisome as there is no let up in the oppression unleashed by the forces.”

“On the one hand, the ruling dispensation announces ‘amnesty’ for stone pelters booked in 2010 and 2016, and on the other, innocent unarmed protestors are being butchered

during peaceful protests. So this ‘amnesty’ is just betrayal,” he said.

He said that killing innocent civilians and maiming youth with pellets and teargas shells has become a routine now.

“The actual plan is to commit genocide of Kashmiris and youth are its first target,” he said.

The Hurriyat chairman said that the “main reason” for unabated killing of civilians is the “black laws like AFSPA that give full impunity to lakhs of forces personnel present in Kashmir to kill anybody at their will, without facing any accountability.”

He said that since New Delhi has choked every form of peaceful protest, with even resistance leadership disallowed to hold meetings, the “only option left with us is to call for a strike.”

“Calling for strikes is the only tool with us to attract world attention towards the pain and sufferings of Kashmiris,” Mirwaiz said.

He said that it is the moral duty of the international community to intervene and play its role to put an end to human rights violations “being committed by lakhs of forces and other state agencies present in Kashmir.”

He strongly denounced cordon and search operations (CASOs) launched by government forces in Kashmir areas in biting cold.

“These operations are causing great hardships for the people,” he said.

Taking at dig at the government over frequent CASOs, Mirwaiz said that under the “patronage” of the ruling regime, the forces on ground “have let loose a reign of terror everywhere.”
