Process begins to mark area the size of Srinagar in Kargil as firing range

The state government has begun the process for marking an area the size of Srinagar city in Kargil as a new firing range for the army.

A notification issued by principal home secretary Raj Kumar Goyal said the government defines about 570,000 kanals (288 square kilometers; Srinagar is about 294 sq km) at Matayen Kharu in Kargil as an area for army to carry out periodic field firing and artillery practice for a period of five years.

Another notification has asked people to file objections, if any, to use of the land for firing practice with the office of the Kargil deputy commissioner within two months.

Deputy commissioner Kargil Vikas Kundal said he is yet to receive any communication from the government in this regard.

In the past three years, the PDP-BJP government has notified four firing ranges for army and paramilitary forces in different parts of the state.

Three of these were re-notified after forces had lost the rights to use them.

First, the government in 2015 allowed the army to carry out artillery practice in Garhi area of Rajouri. In March 2017, the government authorised the army to use 480,000 kanals (60,000 acres) situated at Mandalthang, Shayok in Durbuk area in Leh district as firing range for five years.

In May-June, the government also re-notified a firing range spread over 82 kanals in village Bapli Lote of Udhampur.

In October last year, the Home department re-notified Kaleeth field firing range in Jammu province.

Apart from these four firing ranges, the government has also started the process to re-notify 404 kanals and 13 marlas at village Jhullas in district Poonch as a firing range.
