Mounds of garbage become nuisance in Shopian

The residents of this district today complained that mounds of garbage spread in vast area in Sofanama locality outside mini secretariat Shopian has a major cause of concern for them.

The locals alleged that the municipal committee Shopian has been dumping the garbage generated in the district, near the bank of Rambi Ara outside mini secretariat only 30 meters from Shopian-Pulwama road.

This reporter saw the garbage spread over a vast area with hundreds of dogs scavenging near the famous Heemal Nagrai spring (the spring having historical importance). 

“The garbage is present near the bank of Rambi Ara which is source of drinking water for hundreds of villages in low lying areas,” Abdul Ahad, a local said.

“Everyday a truck comes with the garbage and drops it here,” Shabir Ahmad a resident said.

When contacted, deputy commissioner Shopian Aijaz Ahmad Khan said: “The dumping place is not on the banks of Rambi Ara but it is near it. There is no better place than this spot to dump the garbage and it is causing no damage to anyone”.
