Ex-Law minister Sheikh Maqbool passes away

Former law and parliamentary affairs minister Sheikh Muhammad Maqbool passed away here on Thursday.  He was 90.

Maqbool was a close associate of National Conference founder late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah and was part of ‘mahaz rai-shumari movement.’  Starting his political career after participating in the town area elections in 1973, Maqbool was elected ward member from Khawja Bagh ward here.  Later, he was elected as chairman of the Town Area Committee Baramulla.

He later joined National Conference and was elected twice from the Baramulla constituency, in 1983 and 1987.

After being elected from the Baramulla constituency in 1987, he was inducted in the cabinet as law and parliamentary affairs minister during the NC regime.

Maqbool survived an assassination attempt during the early phase of militancy when he, along with his brother, was attacked on his way to offer evening prayers at Kanlibagh, Baramulla. His brother Sheikh Iqbal was killed in that attack.

Minister for Public Works Naeem Akhtar condoled Maqbool’s demise and termed him as a “legal luminary who, with his insight, did a great service to the society and the administration.”

“The deceased had in-depth knowledge of laws and always favoured tweaking of laws in such a way that it will provide greater benefit to people particularly the marginalised section,” he said, adding that the services of Maqbool will be remembered for a long time in the state.

The minister prayed to Almighty to grant the deceased highest place in Jannat and give courage to his family members to bear the loss.
