Dr Qasim’s health deteriorating for want of treatment: MDM

Muslim Deeni Mahaz (MDM) on Wednesdayexpressed grave concern over the deteriorating health condition of its incarcerated chairman Dr Muhammad Qasim in Udhampur jail.

“Dr Qasim is suffering from acute Glaucoma and L4 L5 Disc problem and in absence of any medical treatment his condition has deteriorated considerably,” a spokesman of the MDM, in a statement today, said, adding that “Dr Qasim is being subjected to political vendetta due to his non-compromising political stand.”

The spokesman said he was shifted from Srinagar central jail on the “pretext” of a medical checkup despite clear court orders that he should not be shifted from Srinagar central jail. “His shifting was against the standing instructions of the Supreme Court of India which has clearly laid down that a life prisoner should be lodged at a jail nearest to his home,” the spokesman said.

He said, “In Udhampur jail, he has been denied any kind of medical treatment that has resulted in the worsening of his medical conditions. People are not even being allowed to meet him.”

“After serving 25 years in prison, the way forward should have been to release him but the Indian government and its local stooges have shredded every word in the book of law in his case,” the spokesman said, appealing to the world community and the human rights organisations to look into the case of Dr Qasim and act against “the way a man is being held incarcerated for his political ideology”.
