With NHM employees strike entering second month today, the patient-care across Kashmir has been hit, sources said.

The NHM employees started their protest programme on 20 December 2017.

Last week Greater Kashmir reported that the operation theatre at Community Health Centre (CHC) Hajin in Bandipora district was defunct for around a month due to the strike. With the only NHM employee manning the OT there remaining on strike, the patients were forced to go to far-off places for operations.

The strike has hit the patient care in South Kashmir also where as many as 1225 employees are posted at various district and sub-district hospitals and primary health centres.

Claiming that government is paying no heed to their demands, spokesman of NHM employees union, Abdul Rouf announced  that the strike has further been extended for 6 days. “We will think of other means of protest if government continues to pay deaf ear to our demands,” he said.

Pertinently, on 11 January, Minister for Health and Medical Education Bali Bhagat informed the legislative assembly that government has conceded maximum demands of the NHM employees, even as their demand for regularization of services is being looked into.

The health minister informed the legislative assembly that “a four member committee has been constituted by the government to look into the demands of the National Health Mission (NHM) employees.”

However, the spokesman of the NHM employees did not buy this argument. He said, “If the statement of the minister has any truth in it, we would like to see the order by virtue of which the so-called four member committee has been framed.”

Talking to Greater Kashmir, Mission Director (NHM) Mohan Singh said:  “Regularization of NHM employees cannot happen overnight; we are working on it and their demands are under active consideration”.
