45 arrested in Baramulla for ‘instigating’ violence over braid-chopping incidents: Police

Police on Saturday said that forty-five persons have been arrested in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district for their alleged role in instigating violence over braid-chopping incidents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Baramulla Imtiyaz Hussain said that most of those arrested were involved in last year’s uprising triggered by the killing of young militant commander Burhan Wani.

Talking to Greater Kashmir on the sidelines of Police Commemoration Day at District Police Line Baramulla, Hussain said that one of the youth arrested in Sheeri is a “notorious stone-pelter”.

“He identified the two Territorial Army soldiers travelling in a passenger bus, got them branded as braid-choppers and instigated violence against them in Sheeri area of Baramulla,” he said.

Hussain said that eleven incidents of braid-chopping have so far been reported from the district.

He attributed three cases to mental illness while the rest of the incidents, he said, have taken place inside the four walls.

“No role of any outside elements has been found in these incidents so far,” said Hussain while issuing a fresh appeal against mob vigilantism.

Pertinently, a mentally deranged person was thrashed by a mob in Mazbug area of Sopore yesterday.

Over a dozen youth have been arrested in the case so far.
