State Congress senior vice-president Sham Lal Sharma resigned from the post on Monday, saying his “conscience did not let me stick to the chair when all Jammu-related issues are being ignored”.

“I cannot remain silent over the neglect of Jammu region. If I cannot speak on issues related to Jammu it is better I leave the chair,” Sharma told Greater Kashmir. Sharma had been appointed as the senior vice-president of the Pradesh Congress Committee by All India Congress Committee on 26 March 2015.

He said he will continue to serve the state as the “mazbootkaryakarta” (steadfast worker) of the Congress party. Sharma said he has forwarded his resignation to AICC president Rahul Gandhi.

A Congress leader said on the condition of anonymity that Sharma was not happy with the “autocracy” of GA Mir, the PCC president.

He said Sharma believed Mir had been promoting “non-performers”, ignoring “deserving and hardworking people”.

“Sharma discussed about this attitude of GA Mir with other party functionaries several times but when he didn’t get any response from other leaders he made up his mind to quit the top chair of the JKPCC,” the leader said.

Mir, however, said: “Today, during conclusion of a party event, Sham Lal Sharma told me he had resigned from the post of senior vice-president.”

“He only told me he wanted transparency in reshuffling of the party cadre as we are going to hold a massive reshuffle within the PCC soon. Sharma had heard from some insiders that I might be providing better opportunities to non-performers.  Had he waited for the reshuffle things would have become clear to him,” he said.

He said he didn’t receive any written clarification from Sham Lal Sharma.

“Within a day or two I will receive in written the resignation letter of Sham Lal Sharma. Only after that I will comment on this issue,” Mir added.
