NC leader warns BJP over ‘tinkering’ with Article 35-A

“Where shall we (mainstream) go if Article 35-A goes? You should also think also about your partner (PDP). Why these issues cropped up only after you attained power?” Shafi asked the BJP legislators.

Senior National Conference leader Muhammad Shafi (Uri) on Friday warned the Bharatiya Janata Party of “serious ramifications” over its attempts to tinker with Article 35-A, even as he targeted the ruling People’s Democratic Party for “surrendering  the  state’s fiscal autonomy to New Delhi.”

In his speech, the veteran legislator slammed the BJP for its “repeated attempts” to erode the state’s special position.

“Where shall we (mainstream) go if Article 35-A goes? You should also think also about your partner (PDP). Why these issues cropped up only after you attained power?” Shafi asked the BJP legislators.

He asked the BJP to “change its stand” on the special position of J&K.

“Don’t think you will change the demography of the state; don’t think outsiders will come to live in J&K if anything happens to the state,” he said.

He also accused the PDP of “surrendering” the state’s fiscal autonomy to New Delhi by implementing the goods and services tax (GST) regime.

“You could have resisted the move but you laid down the arms before New Delhi,” he said.

He also took on the PDP-BJP government for its “internal contradictions and paradoxes.”

“On the one hand, BJP talks of abrogating Article 370 but on the other, the PDP seeks resolution of Kashmir through talks,” he said.

“If you (BJP) say that ‘operation all-out’ and NIA is solution to the problem, then why have your appointed Dineshwar Sharma as an interlocutor?” he said.
