KATHUA CASE: Why victim’s lawyer hosted lunch for accused?

The special public prosecutor Santok Singh Basra, who is defending the victim of Rasana rape-murder incident, Thursday hosted lunch for the accused as a “humanitarian gesture.”  Basra, actually wanted to cut the long short as large part of the proceedings was being consumed by a controversy about the accused not being fed in Gurdaspur jail where they were shifted on Wednesday. The accused told the court they had been refused dinner at the jail and were not even provided lunch in Pathankot court. The defense lawyer argued that the Gurdaspur jailer had actually turned down the Supreme Court order by refusing lunch to the detainees and throwing up the excuse that he had no provision for the same.

As the proceedings for the day began in the Pathankot court, the defense lawyers complained in the court that the accused were “neither provided dinner last night in the Gurdasspur jail nor they were provided lunch today in the Pathankot district and session court despite Supreme Court’s order,” sources said.

Pertinently, when the accused were taken for hearing to Pathankot from Kathua, the J&K Government used to provide ‘packed lunch’ to the accused on a daily basis.

“However, the Gurdasspur jail Superintendent informed the court that he could not provide lunch to the accused on a daily basis because “there is no such provision,” sources informed.”

“The Public Prosecutor immediately called the Gurdasspur jail Superintendent asking him about the reasons for not providing packed lunch to the accused in the court despite there being Supreme Court order,” defence lawyer AK Sawhney informed Greater Kashmir.

When the arguments for the same were being traded the Special Public Prosecutor, Basra volunteered to host lunch for the accused for the day. “They will be my guest for today, I will bear the expenses for this lunch,” Sawhney said, according Swahney. “The Public Prosecutor ordered lunch from the court’s canteen for the accused,” the defense lawyer said.

“The court appointed lawyer Master Mohan Lal directing him to go to Gurdasspur jail along with Supreme Court order and inform the jailer about the same,” sources said. The report will be submitted in the Pathankot court tomorrow, they said. Meanwhile, the cross-examination of the then SHO, Hira Nagar Police Station was completed today.

Meanwhile, a total of 8 witnesses have been cross-examined by the defense lawyers out of the total 221 witnesses in the case.
