A high alert was sounded in Jammu and Punjab on Wednesday after four suspects carjacked a taxi they hired from Jammu railway station.

Witnesses said that four men, one of them identifying himself as an army man, hired a Toyota Innova taxi from Jammu Tawi Railway station for going to Pathankot on Tuesday night at around 9 pm.

On reaching Madhopur area of Punjab, the four men in the taxi reportedly had meals and asked the driver, Raj Kumar, to park on the roadside as one of them complained of vomiting.

Reports said the carjackers then threatened to shoot the driver who pleaded for his life as the suspects drove away in his taxi.

Meanwhile, the railway station taxi union vice-president in Jammu, Rajvir Singh, who accessed the CCTV footage of the taxi stand, said one of the four men wore a monkey cap and claimed to be a Major in army boarded an Innova taxi (JK02AW-0992) from Jammu Tawi Railway Station at 9 pm on Tuesday night and later hijacked it from Madhopur area of Punjab.

According to Singh, the carjackers were speaking pure Punjabi generally known to be spoken on the other side of the border in Pakistan.

“When the driver of the taxi last replied to my phone calls, he was also at Sujanpur police station where he was helping the local police identify the suspects,” Singh said.

Police in Pathankot were hunting for the suspects as investigation was started into the incident.

“As of now, we’ve not received any breakthrough in the case, but investigation is on,” Vivek Singh, SSP for Pathankot, told Greater Kashmir.

“I cannot rule it out fully that they were not (militants), but on the basis of preliminary investigation, it appears to be a case of vehicle theft.”
