Director general Border Security Force KK Sharma said on Tuesday that a group of five militants has “reportedly” entered into the Indian territory “probably through a tunnel” underneath the International Border.

Sharma, however, said no tunnel has been detected along the IB so far, but searches are underway along the border. Militants would be killed once found, he added.

The DG said entire Jammu region, especially border belts, has been alerted and security agencies have been directed to coordinate with each other and verify intelligence inputs.

Sharma was interacting with the media at BSF headquarters after paying floral tributes to a BSF soldier killed in Pakistan firing in Samba last night.

Sharma said the entry of militants into Indian territory before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit—he is scheduled to visit on May 19 to inaugurate development projects—is a serious issue but “our sister agencies and the police are fully aware of it and appropriate measures have been taken”.

Calling Pakistan a “hostile neighbor”, Sharma said Pakistani forces fire into the Indian side every year at the time of harvesting and “keep making attempts of infiltration, ceasefire violations but we always give them a befitting reply”.

On the proposed “smart fencing” along the border, Sharma said Union home minister Rajnath Singh would be soon inaugurating it.
