“Teeyan Sabdiyan Saanjian Hundiyaan (Daughters belong to all). We should not discriminate between religion and region when it comes to the safety of daughters,” prominent Dogri writer, LalitMagotra said while quoting the famous Dogri saying at a seminar in Jammu organized by the GurjarDesh Charitable Trust in support of Kathua victim.

Magotra, who voluntarily opted to take the podium first for slamming the perpetrators said, “I am happy that cutting across the religious and regional lines, people in Jammu stood for the nomadic girl who was brutally raped and murdered by some people.”

He said the Kathua victim was not daughter of a particular community or section but of entire Jammu region and hence every Jammuite should take proud in expressing in solidarity with the family of the girl.

“How would have I, you and we felt if our daughter had to face similar crime? Obviously we have demanded severe punishment to the accused. After proven guilty by the court, the accused should be hanged to death,” the Dogri writer said.

Khalid Hussain, member Jammu Civil Society seconded DrLalitMagotra on the concern raised by the prominent Dogri writer. He said, “I also believe in TeeyanSabdiyanSaanjiyaanHundiyaan concept.”

“I and DrMagotra are childhood friends and we shared every Eid together irrespective of the fact that I could not visit his (DrMagotra’s) place to wish him on Diwali or Lohri. We never discriminated between religions, but today, some people are out to divide us on the basis of our religion. We have to jointly foil their attempts and ensure justice to the Kathua victim,” Hussain said.

He said, on heinous nature of crimes like rape and murder, the country has to learn from Pakistan judiciary which he said, always gives fast track judgments and severe punishments to the accused.

“Why not our judiciary also sets an example on this matter and ensures speedy trial and justice to the victim?” he questioned.

Another speaker in the seminar, advocate Ashok Basotra said that the Kathua episode shook every person whose heart beats.

He also slammed lawyers who took to the streets in favour of the accused and obstructed the Crime Branch officials from presenting the challan in the heinous crime.

“How could one whose heart beats do this? This has seriously defamed the image of entire judiciary, but I appeal to the national, international as well as regional media to avoid blaming all the advocates as I and many like me didn’t participate in the lawyers’ protests,” advocate Basotra said.

Earlier addressing media men, MasudChoudhary, the former IG, JKP and prominent Gujjar leader of the state hailed the Supreme Court for showing concern on the brutal rape and murder of the minority community girl.

The Supreme Court has asked the State police to provide protection to the victim’s family and counsel.

Masud Choudhary also took a dig at the lawyers who he said tried to obstruct deliverance of justice to the victim. He said, “I served this state as IG and other positions, but in my service, I never discriminated between religion and region. I tried to ensure justice to everyone. But, today, a section of people of this region are trying to project a wrong image of Jammu region.”

“Jammu is very dear to me. I never want my Jammu be known for wrong reasons. I want the lawyers who obstructed CB officials from filing charge sheet also punished under the law,” Choudhary added.
