Suspected militants overpowered a policeman at the Rumi Gate of Kashmir University and snatched his service rifle, a police official said on Wednesday.

This is the second rifle snatching incident in the past 20 days. Militants had snatched four rifles from policemen guarding a post at Hyderpora in the city outskirts on April 27.

A police official said while a hunt has been launched to arrest the rifle snatcher, footage from CCTV camera installed at the gate would be used in identifying the suspects.

“We have directed our men to stay alert and to keep an eye at all the entry and exit points of Srinagar city. We are hopeful to get the militants involved in the act soon,” the official said.

“Since 275 militants have been killed since last March it seems militants are falling short of weapons. Attacking cops to snatch weapons reflects their frustration,” he said.

In the past three years, militants have snatched 250 weapons from the forces’ personnel in Kashmir, Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti told the Assembly last year. She also stated that only 76 weapons were recovered and 90 accused people were arrested.
