A ‘mega’ convention of National Conference delegates here later this month may vote for election of Omar Abdullah as the party president, a source said on Thursday.  The incumbent president Farooq Abdullah may take the role of the party patron.

The source said that the National Conference is holding the delegates’ convention after more than one-and-a-half decade here on October 29. The program, likely to be held at Indoor Stadium, would see participation of delegates from across Jammu and Kashmir.

As per its constitution, the National Conference has already held elections to different positions including block, zonal, district and provincial presidents. But the election to the top position of the president is yet to be conducted.

“It will be a mega event where the party leaders will deliberate upon the prevailing situation in J&K and also discuss ways to strengthen the party at grassroots. However the convention holds significance as all delegates who vote to choose the president will participate in the event,” said the source.

A senior party leader said that if everything goes according to the plan, Omar will be chosen the next president of the party during the program.

“The convention will be the culmination of the election process within the party and it is all about the election of the president,” the leader said.

47-year old Omar, who took over the reins of the party in 2002 for the first time after joining politics as MP in 1998, was replaced by his father in 2009 when he (Omar) became the Chief Minister of the state.

In April 2012, 80-year-old Abdullah, who was first appointed to the position in 1981, appointed son Omar as the working president of the party, a post which he is holding today.

The leader said that the party’s “subject committee” would meet in coming days to “take a call on important issues” and clear different resolutions to be taken up for vote during the October 29 convention.

The leader said the state is going to witness election to the Anantnag Lok Sabha seat in coming months. Then, he said, there are general elections slated for 2019 to be followed by the state Assembly elections.

“The convention will set the tone for election preparations as the party will go into the election mode from the next year,” said the leader.
