Militants on Sunday opened fire on an army convoy in Bijbehara town on Srinagar-Jammu highway, officials said. However, no one was injured in the attack.

“Militants fired a few gun shots towards an army vehicle near Goriwan locality in Bijbehara town,” a police official said.

The gunmen fled after carrying out the attack. Police, army and CRPF later cordoned off the area and carried out searches to nab the attackers, the official added.

South Kashmir has lately witnessed a spurt in militant attacks. On last Friday, militants stuck in Achabal area of Anantnag district, killing six policemen, including Station House Officer, Achabal.

 

CARPENTER SUCCUMBS

A carpenter who was shot at by unidentified gunmen in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district last night succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, even as suspected militants fired upon an army convoy near Bijbehara on Srinagar-Jammu highway, police and reports said.     

Aijaz Ahmed Malik son of Ali Muhammad of Aurubagh area of Pinglana in Pulwama district breathed his last at SMHS hospital in Srinagar this morning, police said.

As already reported, gunmen had barged into Malik’s house late last night and fired upon him. He was rushed to the hospital in a critical condition after receiving a bullet in his abdomen.

Locals said police had recently arrested Malik in connection with a lawyer’s killing in Shopian. Unidentified gunmen had shot dead Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan, a public prosecutor of Pinjoora, Shopian in April this year.
