Army and special operations group of J&K police on Monday allegedly went berserk in Ashtengoo village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district after an army cavalcade was pelted with stones.

The residents alleged that army and SOG men broke windowpanes of residential houses and damaged several vehicles parked on roadsides.

The villagers who were mourning the death of a youth Naseer-ud-Din Sheikh and a policeman Shahzad Ahmad—killed in different incidents last week—said they had blocked the road in protest against the killings.

The locals said in the meantime, an army convoy passed through the area which was pelted with stones by youth. Later, SOG party also came to the village.

“They came out of their vehicle and went berserk. They broke everything that came their way,” the local residents said.

They said soldiers broke windowpanes of a local Jamia Masjid.

The residents later held a protest demonstration and blocked Bandipora-Sopore road to register their protest against the forces’ highhandedness.

A senior police official said a cavalcade of the army which passed through the village “came under stone-pelting.”

“The situation was soon brought under control,” he said.

Meanwhile, Srinagar-based Army spokesman, Col Rajesh Kalia denied the allegations, saying no soldier was involved in damaging or ransacking the property in the village.
