A civilian was injured when government forces allegedly opened fire near Drabgam village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Monday evening. Police however claimed the civilian was wounded in “exchange of fire” between forces and militants.

A senior police officer claimed that an army party was fired upon by militants near Firdosabad Colony in Drabgam at 8.30 pm. “The soldiers retaliated and in the exchange of fire, one civilian namely Muhammad Altaf Zargar, a resident of Aglar Kandi, was injured,” senior superintendent of police Pulwama, Choudhary Aslam said.

Police also issued a statement about the incident which read: “As reported by security forces, militants fired upon their patrolling party near Firdousabad Drabgam Pulwama which was retaliated. In this incident, one civilian Altaf Ahmad Zargar was injured. He has been referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment. His condition is stated to be stable so far.”

However locals alleged that government forces fired without any provocation.

“There was no stone throwing or firing on the army party. The forces fired without any provocation, injuring one civilian who was going to his home,” they said.

Altaf works as a salesman in a shop in Pulwama and, according to locals, was travelling in a TATA-mobile vehicle when he was fired upon.

Meanwhile, a firing incident created panic in Achan and Heff areas of Shopian at 9.20 pm.

Unconfirmed reports said militants fired upon an army patrolling party which was retaliated to, triggering exchange of firing.

However no official gave any details about the incident.

Police officials of Pulwama said the incident has happened “across the bridge which falls in Shopian district.”
