For last 70 years or so the two countries have been trying to have sincere and honest meetings to sort out various issues bequeathed to them by the British at the time of partition. However, as always, never the twain shall meet! It has been disclosed in the declassified secret documents of the British Home Office that they had deliberately created conditions not only for the partition of the sub-continent but for the creation of the Kashmir dispute to keep these two neighbouring countries fighting with each other. The greatest misfortune for both the countries is that they allow themselves to be manipulated by the outsiders whose interest is served by war and not by peace. The worst tragedy is that both the countries have teeming millions living under the poverty line and the most urgent task for them is to improve the living conditions of their people and not to waste their precious resources in buying weapons from the western war mongers to keep their economies going! The world armament production is more than a 1000 billion dollars and the American share is more than half. Peace in the world means lesser jobs for the American people back home! Incidentally, India is the largest buyer of these armaments! Pakistan is no less. Almost 22% of their budget goes into arms purchases and defence. Incidentally, both the countries have sizeable number of people who derive their “prosperity” from the defence purchases. They are the true “beneficiaries of conflict”! They will never allow peace to prevail in the sub-continent. It has been regularly observed that whenever peace is about to get a chance, something odd happens in the nick of the time to derail the whole process. Tragically, the people directly in the line of fire of both the countries are the Kashmiris. They have been continuously suffering for last more than seventy years. Thousands have been killed, thousands injured and maimed, properties destroyed and economy gone into shambles because of the relationship of the two countries. They say if two elephants fight the grass gets trampled and if the two elephants make love, the grass still gets trampled! One can only keep fingers crossed if the two antagonists will ever be able to meet and have a fair and honest relationship to relieve Kashmiris of a continuous torture.
