Tourism Deptt holds promotional festival at Kokernag

The department today organised first of its kind one-day tourism festival in Kokernag, a famous scenic spot 25 km from Anantnag town to woo tourists to this destination.

Tourism Department today vowed to harness the tourism potential of Kokernag and its upper areas and also promote it as an angling destination.  

The department today organised first of its kind one-day tourism festival in Kokernag, a famous scenic spot 25 km from Anantnag town to woo tourists to this destination.

“The aim of the festival is to attract tourist to this beautiful scenic spot and also create awareness about the facilities available here,” said Director Tourism, Kashmir, Mehmood Ahmad Shah.

He said that Kokernag can be promoted as a best adventure tourism destination. “What we have seen that most of the tourists remain confined to Srinagar, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam. So, our goal is to explore the tourism potential of Kokernag springs and Botanical garden besides other scenic spots in the vicinity- Dandipora, Daksum, Sinthan top,” he said.

Shah said that other spots in the upper reaches of Kokernag like Margan valley, Marwa valley, Fambran valley, Kachvan and springs like-Choharnag are a trekkers delight.  

“The BrengiNalla flowing through Kokernag has a tremendous potential for fishing and the activities were in full swing in sixties era. So, our department is making efforts to revive angling and promote the place as angling destination too,” he added.

He said that in this regard the department is working in tandem with department of fisheries.

“A ‘catch and release’ angling competition was organized today here wherein invited professional anglers from Kashmir participated . We are also releasing a video on social networking sites for the promotion of angling in Kashmir valley, Shah said”

Minister of state (MOS) for Forest Ecology and Environment  Zahoor Mir; sitting MLA Kokernag-Breng Abdul Raheem Rather, sitting MLA Pulwama; Khalil Bandh; PDP woman wings leader and legislature AnjumFazili; former PDP minister Abdul GaffarSofi, Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag, MuhamadYounis Malik  besides senior officials from administration, tourism and allied sectors, army and police officials also  attended the function. 

MLA Kokernag along with DC Anantnag and Director Tourism also flagged off a Trekking expedition of a group of students from Government Higher Secondary School, Kokernag who headed towards Calcium-nag alpine lake in the highlands of Kokernag. A mountain biking competition was held from Sinthan top to Kokernag as well.

During the function held at DakBanglowKokernag artists enthralled the audiences with colorful events including plays, skits, traditional folk songs and various other cultural events.

Various stalls were also put on display by tourism department and allied sectors- agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, handicrafts, handloom, animal husbandry, sheep department to promote the products.
