Mirwaiz slams New Delhi for cancellation of Indo-Pak talks

“To talk war and create fear among the people is no bravery or nationalism. People can’t be fooled all the time,” he said, and later tweeted the same.

Two days after cancellation of proposed foreign minister-level talks between India and Pakistan, the Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday blamed New Delhi’s “arrogant approach” for what he called “loss of another opportunity for a peace dialogue” between the two countries. He also said that the talk of war to “create fear among people” was “no bravery or nationalism.”

India called off the proposed dialogue with Pakistan on Saturday, day after three Jammu and Kashmir policemen were abducted and later killed by suspected militants in southern Shopian district. On Saturday, the army chief General BipinRawat called for “avenging Pakistan army and militants’ brutalities on Indian soldiers,” while the Pakistan army hit back saying it was “ready for a war, but chooses peace in the interest of people and neighbours.”

Addressing a seminar organised by Hurriyat Conference (G) to pay tributes to Imam Hussain (AS), Mirwaiz Umar said that it was unfortunate that yet another opportunity to talk peace with Pakistan and bring the region out of duress was rejected by the government of India.

“To talk war and create fear among the people is no bravery or nationalism. People can’t be fooled all the time,” he said, and later tweeted the same.

Mirwaiz accused New Delhi of “employing various means” to break people’s unity in Kashmir.

“All measures adopted by New Delhi to force people into submission have failed because people are committed to achieve the right to self-determination. The huge Muharram processions across Kashmir recently are an eye-opener on sectarian unity and the demand for right to self-determination,” he said. “During these Muharram processions, portraits of Kashmir martyrs were seen while pro-freedom slogans echoed from everywhere. This unity shown by the youth deserves applauds.”

Mirwaiz said that a massive anti-election campaign will be launched across Kashmir under the slogan—“no election, only right to self-determination.”

“Wherever our cadres can reach, they will start apprising the people about the boycott of upcoming civic polls,” he said. “We also want to tell the people that their resilience and patience will act as torchbearer for the joint resistance leadership.”

Paying rich tributes to Karbala martyrs, Mirwaiz said that Karbala has left a great lesson of patience and courage for the people of Kashmir. “The message of Karbala is not to bow before the falsehood and to fight for the rights,” he said.

He also hailed the courage of hundreds of prisoners languishing in various jails in and outside the state. “We expect ups and downs as well as challenges. Karbala teaches us to face the challenges with belief and hope,” he said.

Mirwaiz urged the people of Kashmir to maintain unity on all fronts and not to “fall prey to various methods being used by New Delhi to divert the attention from the basic issue of Kashmir.”
