A few months from now, Adil Ahmed would be a happy—and lucky—father, if he survives.

A resident of Anantnag district, Adil, 25, received “firearm injuries” in the head on 11 April at Qaimoh in Kulgam, where a gunfight had erupted between militants and forces. Four civilians were killed when the forces fired into the protesters who had protested near the gunfight site and clashed with the troopers to help the militants escape.

Adil was married last August and his wife is expecting a baby.

Medical superintendent SKIMS Dr Farooq Jan said the firearm injury had caused a depressed fracture and hemorrhage in his brain.

“He continues to be critical,” Dr Jan said. He is being sustained on a ventilator.

Another doctor said Adil’s vital parameters like blood pressure and heart rate continue “to be deranged”.

“We are planning to do tracheostomy today,” said a doctor.

The rattled family slumped further when doctors informed them about the tracheostomy, a procedure in which an opening is created in the windpipe of a person to allow air in when she is not able to breathe.

The family’s another worry is Adil’s pregnant wife, who is also his cousin.

“She keeps asking about him on phone. She lost both her parents within a span of three months in 2016. It was then that we decided to marry her off to Adil,” said a cousin of Adil (name withheld on request) who broke down outside the ICU.

“Our hearts sink whenever the hospital staff calls out for attendants of the patient on Bed No. 6,” he said.

Ahmed, a political science graduate, was planning to start a new business.

“He had big dreams about his family,” the cousin said.
