Demanding body of a militant who was killed last month along with his four associates in an encounter in north Kashmir's Bandipora district, the residents of Kongan village of south Kashmir's Pulwama district held protests in the town on Wednesday.

A police official said that scores of residents of Kongan village protested in Pulwama seeking the body of the local militant Abdul Rashid Lone who they claimed was one of the five militants killed in the anti-militancy operation on September 25 in Sumlar area of district Bandipora.

Some youth also threw stones on the police station Pulwama and the cops responded by firing tear smoke canisters, the official said.

Lone, according to a relative, had crossed over to LoC some twenty years ago.

The relatives had identified Lone after his picture surfaced on the social media following the Sumlar encounter.

Deputy Commissioner, Pulwama, Ghulam Mohammad Dar told Greater Kashmir that two families, one from Pulwama and another from Ganderbal, had claimed the same body.

"The DNA samples of both the families have been taken and sent to laboratory. The identity will only be ascertained once the reports are available with us."

All the five militants killed during the encounter were interred in the border area of Uri after their identity had not been immediately ascertained.
