At 23, south Kashmir student wins British Chevening fellowship

At 23, Shohaib Lateef Khan, a law graduate from Anantnag district, has earned the distinction of becoming the youngest person this year to win the Chevening fellowship. The fellowship is a UK government’s global scholarship program to which hundreds of people from all around the world apply every year. 

The scholarship offers’ future leaders’ an opportunity to pursue a fully-funded one year master’s program in any subject in universities across the UK.

Son of Lateef Ahmad Khan, a government employee, and Waheeda Khan, a house wife, Shohaib was chosen from a big pool of 70,000 applicants from across 170 countries. He is now a proud recipient of the fellowship along with 1400 other students from across the world .

Sixty more candidates from India have been awarded the prestigious fellowship with Shohaib being the youngest.

Originally hailing from the Qazigund area and now a resident of Iqbal Abad locality in Anantnag town, Shohaib has pursued an integrated law degree from the University of Kashmir and is a 2017 graduate.

Earlier Shohaib was also selected for a three week student’s exchange program by Urban Youth Academy-supported by the UNDP, the ADB and 18 other local UN bodies.

 Shohaib credits his parents , and teachers for his success.

“When I applied for the fellowship, certain people doubted my skills and pulled me down. I would say that this was the toughest thing I have had to face. But I pushed on and was lucky enough to have some wonderful people on my side. Most importantly my parents stood by me and I attribute my success to their tireless appreciation and love. I would also thank my teachers who helped me throughout the application process,” says Shohaib.
