The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) is set to begin work on a World Bank-funded project to increase efficiency of dewatering pumping stations in summer capital of Srinagar.

An official said the Corporation submitted a detailed report about “technical and financial evaluations” on the project to the financial institutions on Thursday to pave way for release of Rs 104 funding.

While the proposal to raise level of at least 50 pumping stations was mooted soon after 2014 flood during which city remained marooned it didn’t witness nay progress owing to bureaucratic hassles all these years.

The official said once the project is completed efficiency of entire dewatering network would increase almost three-fold.

After every few millimeters of rainfall dewatering pumps located in water low lying and flood prone areas of city such as Batamaloo, Bemina, Mustafabad, Allochi Bagh, Jawahar Nagar are rendered dysfunctional.

Commissioner SMC Peer Hafizullah said as part of project level of these existing pumps will be increased to improve their capacity. “The up gradation will include raising position of these pumps. The present one cusec per second discharge capacity will increase by three-fold after completion of the project,” Hafizullah said.

The SMC is expecting World Bank approval for project in next one week. “It was lying in limbo for a long time as one of the consultants was not submitting DPR…but now we are on the job now,” said Hafizullah.

He said 29 dewatering pumps in the city have already been upgraded by J&K Economic Reconstruction Agency.

In commercial hub of Srinagar, several areas such as Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk and Residency Road are prone to water-logging. Other areas on oytskirts of the city including Tengpora, Natipora, Eidgah and 90-feet Road also face water-logging during rainwater.

The SMC commissioner said up gradation of dewatering pumps in the city-centre would be taken under the project. “Till now we were not in a position to use de-watering pumps everywhere as accumulated water needed to be 3-4 inches so that pipe of dewatering pump could submerge into the water. Up gradation will enhance the dewatering capacity and help the pumps to discharge even less quantity of rain water,” said the commissioner.
