Thannamandi Rifle Theft: Security forces put on high alert in Rajouri, Poonch

With security agencies forced into a state of tizzy after Monday’s incident of rifle theft from Shahdra Sharif Shrine in Thannamandi, the security forces have been put on high alert in Rajouri and Poonch districts, with intelligence agencies having an apprehension of more such incidents in the future.

Sources within the security forces told Greater Kashmir that the rifle theft in Thannamandi has been taken very seriously by the authorities. "Although the weapon has been recovered, but all this happened due to gross negligence of the security personnel, who violated Standard Operating Procedure,” sources said.

They further said that the incident took place when all the personnel posted at Shahdra Sharif Shrine left to pray, leaving the post unguarded. Meanwhile, the intelligence agencies have also issued an alert following the incident, asking all security forces to maintain extra alert.

"Monday’s incident clearly shows that militants are eyeing Rajouri and Poonch districts and it is a clear sign as they (arrested militants) came to steal the rifle under a well-knit plan," said sources within the intelligence.

"The posts where only a couple of personnel are deployed are the most susceptible to such attacks. Everyone needs to be extra cautious,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that the incident took place on Monday morning, when two boys decamped with a rifle and magazines from the security post at Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah Shrine, Shahdra Sharif. Both the boys were arrested and the weapon was recovered after a brief shootout at a check-post in Thannamandi.
