Inhabitants of Arihal in this district today protested against the police for arresting several youth on “false charges” of stone pelting from the area.

The protestors said the police personnel during Wednesday night barged into several residential houses at Arihal area asking for the youth present in the houses.

“It was around 11 pm when the police personnel raided several houses and detained a dozen youth. As the word about the police raid spread, the residents came out and raised slogans,” they said.

“On Thursday morning the locals blocked Pulwama -Shopian road halting traffic from both the sides. They were demanding the release of detained youth who they said were innocent,” witnesses said.

Local sources told Greater Kashmir that 12 youth were detained. “On Wednesday few youth had pelted police with stones when they were passing through Arihal village. On the same night, the government forces raided the village and detained the youth,” they said.

Officials confirmed the detention of the youth saying they were “involved in stone pelting.”

SSP Pulwama, Muhammed Aslam Chaudhry said a team of police had gone to arrest some drug peddlers in Arihal “but some local youth resisted and pelted police with stones.”

"These youth were first identified in video footage and later detained as they were involved in stone pelting," he said, adding that some of them may have links with drug peddlers, which is being investigated.
